Although the Go Pro underwater camera housing is a very well constructed product, when mounted on a speargun, excessive recoil might cause the camera to tilt forward and downward after the shot. In short, the swivel knob on the Go Pro housing will not tighten down enough to totally eliminate this problem.
Tightening the swivel knob on the GoPro housing will take care of this in most cases. However, for guns with a lot of power and recoil we recommend the “MAKO Recoil Stabilizer”.
The optional MAKO “Recoil Stabilizer” is a back plate to anchor the Go Pro housing using a plastic tie strap. This holds the Go Pro housing in place in the event of severe gun recoil.
Because the Go Pro housing is available with two back doors (flat and deep well), we offer the MAKO “Recoil Stabilizer” in two sizes to accommodate for both back doors and includes 3 zip ties.
Another benefit to using the MAKO “Recoil Stabilizer” is that the tie wraps also prevent the housing latch from being accidentally opened at depth. At extreme depths, the back door is severely compressed by the water pressure, thus making the latch a bit loose. Should the latch be accidentally opened at depth, the housing could open and flood upon resurfacing.
